I Love Where I Live

Amy’s Top Picks for Hiking Near Auburn & Lake Martin

If you know me, you know I love flowers — and there’s one place on Lake Martin where I can never leave empty-handed. Linda’s at Walnut Hill has been my go-to garden spot for years. From overflowing ferns to cheerful mixed pots, it’s where my yard (and my heart) get a seasonal refresh.

Most people would probably say Chewacla when you ask about hiking in Auburn, and they wouldn’t be wrong! But if you’re looking for the road less traveled, hop in your car and head about 30 minutes west—you’ll find some of the best hiking in Alabama around Lake Martin.

Smith Mountain Fire Tower – A Hiker’s Sunrise Dream

This one’s a favorite! If you’ve never watched the sunrise from Smith Mountain Fire Tower, you’re missing out. The views are magical, especially in the early morning when the lake reflects the first light of the day.

I’ll admit—I laughed when I saw the sign at the start of the trail that said “DIFFICULT” (because I hike out west a lot). BUT… I have to say, it is pretty tough, especially if you take the real Fire Tower Trail after climbing the tower itself.

Your Trail Options:

  • Fire Tower Only: A very doable hike with rewarding panoramic views.
  • Full Fire Tower Trail: This is the real deal. It’s challenging, but totally worth it.

Pro tip: TAKE WATER! This one isn’t a casual stroll.

The James M. Scott Deadening Alpine Trail

This 4.2-mile loop trail is the most challenging of the trails created by the Cherokee Ridge Alpine Trail Association, but it is also the most rewarding. You also have the option to take the crossover route and hike only 3.1 miles. In addition to spectacular views of Lake Martin, the cliffs of the Tallapoosa River, the Needles Eye, and Jasmine Bluff are just a few of the unique rock formations that await the hiker.

John B. Scott Forever Wild Trail

This 4.4-mile trail near Kent, Alabama, is a hidden gem. Rated as a moderate hike, it takes about 2 hours to complete and is perfect for those looking for a scenic and well-marked path.

One of my favorite things about the John B. Scott Forever Wild Trail is that it follows Nature’s Path—a very doable, well-marked trail with access to swimming and picnic areas. It’s also very close to Kennebec, making it a great spot for a weekend outdoor adventure.

More trail recommendations coming soon—stay tuned! Let me know if you’ve hiked any of these, or if you have a favorite hiking spot I need to check out!

Our yard looks so good because of Linda’s — and because she tells me not to buy the stuff I’ll kill. That’s a true friend.
