Amy's Podcast
Amy shares a hilarious and slightly humbling story about getting pulled over on Highway 34 while driving from Auburn to StillWaters at Lake Martin. What started as a freezing five-degree trip with her 83-year-old mom turned into flashing blue lights, pink pleather pants, and a valuable reminder about speed limits and summer roadblocks around the lake.

There are some days that just hand you a story. And this one came with blue lights flashing on Highway 34. In this episode of Toomers to Lake Martin, Amy shares what happened when a freezing five-degree morning, a chatty 83-year-old mom, and a little bit of a lead foot collided on the way from Auburn, Alabama to the lake.
The Drive from Auburn to StillWaters
Amy was heading from Auburn, Alabama to StillWaters at Lake Martin, showing her mom their new lake place for the first time. It was brutally cold. Five degrees cold.
They were cruising down Highway 34, chatting away, when a state trooper passed them, hit the brakes, and turned around.
Blue lights.
They pulled over right beside Amy’s own billboard on Highway 34. The irony was not lost on her.
Pink Fur, Pleather, and a State Trooper
This was not a subtle moment. Amy was wearing a hot pink fur jacket with royal blue accents and pink pleather pants. She had just come from a baby shower and looked like a wrapped present.
The trooper approached and asked where they were headed.
“StillWaters.”
License? Yes. Insurance card? Not on hand.
After checking her record and seeing she was insured with Travelers and had a clean history, the trooper issued a warning instead of a ticket.
Speed limit: 45. Amy’s speed: 62.
Lake Martin Speed Limits Are Not Suggestions
Most county roads around Lake Martin are 45 mph. It may feel like open road, especially on freezing mornings when nobody else is out, but enforcement is real.
Roadblocks Around Lake Martin
Many visitors don’t realize this, but there are regular roadblocks during the summer months around Lake Martin.
You’ll often see them on Highway 72 coming out of Auburn toward the lake.
They are also common near Bama Park on Highway 50.
If you’re traveling from Alexander City toward popular lake spots like Chuck’s Marina, you may be stopped.
Law enforcement will ask for your driver’s license and check drivers carefully, especially during peak summer weekends.
The Takeaway
Lake life is relaxed. The roads are not.
Watch the speed limits. Keep your insurance handy. And don’t assume cold weather means no enforcement.
Amy wrapped up this episode sitting at The Kennebec at Lake Martin, grateful for a warning instead of a ticket.
Peace out. And remember, home is the nicest place there is.
