If you’re considering a move to Auburn, Alabama—first of all, yay! I’m Amy Cotney, your local real estate agent and unofficial tour guide to all things quirky, cozy, and distinctly Auburn. I’ve worked with dozens of newcomers, and I’ve noticed the same lightbulb moments again and again. So let’s skip the trial and error. Here are five things most people don’t find out until they’ve already unpacked—and by then, they wish someone had clued them in.
1. Game Day Changes *Everything*
It’s not just football. It’s a full-town transformation. Streets close, restaurants fill up, and suddenly your quiet Saturday is packed with 90,000 of your new best friends. Plan your errands and reservations accordingly. Or better yet—join the fun. You don’t have to be a football fan to love the energy.
2. Grocery Stores Have a Rhythm
Yes, even the Publix has a “best time to go.” It’s all about timing. Avoid Sundays after church, and absolutely steer clear of the first week of each semester. College students swarm the stores like it’s a sport. Locals know to stock up early and skip the chaos.
3. You’ll Become a Porch Person
Whether it’s a swing, a rocking chair, or a row of Adirondacks, front porches matter here. This is a town where people still wave, still chat across driveways, still know their mail carrier by name. Don’t be surprised if your porch becomes your favorite “room” in the house.
4. There’s Real Culture—If You Know Where to Look
Think it’s all football and frat houses? Think again. From intimate jazz nights to independent film screenings and gallery shows, Auburn has a creative side. You just have to get on the right mailing lists—or ask me, and I’ll point you toward the hidden gems.
5. You’ll See the Same Faces—And That’s a Good Thing
Auburn feels bigger than it is, but you’ll quickly realize you’re running into the same folks at the farmers market, the dog park, and yes—even the DMV. It’s one of those towns where strangers become neighbors, and neighbors become friends. That’s the Auburn magic.
Thinking of putting down roots in this corner of the South? I’d love to help you find the spot that makes you feel at home the moment you walk in the door.
It doesn’t take long to love Auburn—but these five tips will make your first days even better.
